VETERAN Visayan point guard Lou Gatumbato has signed up by the Air21 Express to beef up their backcourt after the unexpected injury on Ronnie Matias and playmaker Marcy Arellano.

Express coach Yeng Guiao confirmed earlier before the Air21-Barako Bull game that the 31-year-old Lou Gatumbato will suit up to add additional support to Wynnie Arboleda and Josh Urbiztondo.

“I think his experience showed. He can make decisions under pressure,” said Guiao of Gatumbato who didn’t find takers when he joined the Annual Draft in 2004.

Guiao said they took in an additional playmaker because their point guards are “not playing they way I expect them to.”

The unheralded Gatumbato -- at 31 years old and seven months the league’s oldest rookie since Shell’s Aris Franco (31 years and one month old) joined the PBA in 1990) – is expected to bring his experience in the team.

Gatumbato played in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association under the Iloilo Mega Volts in 1999 after he graduated from College of Saint Benilde.

Guaio said this is the right time for the free agent to prove his worth.

The Express though did not reveal the contract of Gatumbato due to company’s policies.
