ROOKIE 6-foot-7 center Rabeh Al-Hussaini and veteran guard Wesley Gonzales took the scoring cudgels the rest of the way but couldn’t control San Miguel Beer’s firepower Friday on the way to an 86-100 decision at the Araneta Coliseum.
Al-Hussaini, the Express’ second overall pick in this year’s rookie draft, debuted with 16 points in his first game as a pro in the Philippine Basketball Association’s season 36 Philippine Cup.
Gonzales tallied 6-out-12 shooting in the field for 19 points to lead Air21, while team captain Wynnie Arboleda finished with 13 points and forward Jay-R Quinahan made 10 points.
San Miguel Beer, playing with a lot of experience, turned a slim 49-42 halftime spread to a 15-point advantage in the second half and the Beermen were never threatened all-throughout the game.
Top overall pick Nonoy Baclao did not play in Air21’s first game because of a hyper-extended knee. He is set to rest for at least a week.
Dondon Hontiveros racked up with 24 points and former Express Arwind Santos poured in 19 points to hand the Beermen their first win.
Despite their first loss in the first day, the Express are looking forward to get on the winning track when they face the Rain or Shine Elasto Paintmasters (0-1) on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
